Thoracic Surgery

The coordinated efforts of a dedicated team of experienced surgeons, specialists, nurses, and therapists allow a smooth transition for our patients through our diagnostic facilities, intensive care unit and thoracic surgical units. The advanced technology available allows a number of thoracic procedures to be performed using minimal access surgery.

All patients are evaluated by this multidisciplinary team. Once the patient is diagnosed, the team offers innovative surgical treatment with videothoracoscopy, bronchoscopy, as well as traditional surgical procedures.

Common conditions treated with thoracic surgery include:

Lung Cancer

Thoracoscopy has a large role in diagnosing, staging and treating lung cancer and is frequently used to resect solitary nodules.  Treating patients with this minimally invasive procedure has helped us reduce their length of stay and shortened their recovery time.

Esophageal Disorders

Diseases of the esophagus that can be treated include cancers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, Zenker's and epiphrenic diverticula, Nutcracker esophagus, diffuse esophageal spasm, hypertensive lower esophageal sphincter syndrome and Barrett's esophagus.

Physicians at Renaissance Hospital Dallas approach the treatment of diseases of the esophagus with the goal of not only improving our patients’ health, but also helping to ensure a good quality of life after the treatment. All patients receive a thorough medical and physical work-up along with X-ray scans of the chest and abdomen and if necessary an endoscopic ultrasound.  Some patients receive additional, more high-tech X-rays and scans, a bronchoscopy, where the lungs are examined, and a scan of the brain to determine if there are any neurological problems. Treatment plans are tailored for each patient’s circumstances.

Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) is a common disorder affecting many people. Although it can cause foot, underarm and facial sweating, the most common form affects the hands.  Treatment options include prescription medications and Botox injections, but these are typically used for mild cases and results are temporary.  However, surgical intervention using the Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS) procedure has been proven to cure hyperhidrosis in 95-99% of hand sweating cases, 85% of facial sweating and blushing cases and 75-80% of armpit sweating cases.
