Common Gynecologic Procedures
Some of the more common gynecologic procedures performed at Renaissance Hospital Dallas include:
Diagnostic Dilation & Curettage (D&C)
In this relatively minor procedure the cervical canal is dilated to provide access to the uterine cavity for tissue collection. D&C may be recommended for relief from bleeding and to help diagnose infection, infertility, uterine cancer and other problems.
Hysterectomy
This is the surgical removal of the uterus, through the abdomen or vagina, resulting in the inability to become pregnant. Hysterectomy may be recommended for uterine tumors or fibroids; certain cancers of the cervix, endometrium or ovary; severe and chronic pelvic pain or vaginal bleeding; endometriosis or other conditions.
Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy may be used to diagnose or treat a uterine problem, or confirm results of other tests. It can help identify causes of abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility or repeated miscarriages and also help locate abnormal growths, such as polyps and fibroids, or adhesions. This minor surgical procedure employs a hysteroscope, or thin telescope, that is inserted through the cervix into the uterus.
Pelviscopy
Pelviscopy may be recommended for pelvic pain, evaluation of infertility, sterilization, removal of uterine fibroids, tubal pregnancy or other conditions. Also known as pelvic laparoscopy, this procedure uses a small surgical viewing device called a laparoscope, inserted into the abdomen at the navel, to both to examine and treat pelvic organs.

Gynecological surgery deals with women’s reproductive organs, genitourinary tract and rectal tract.  The primary objectives are to identify and correct malfunctions and help maintain the overall health of the gynecological system. 

At Renaissance Hospital Dallas, our surgeons use advanced laparoscopy in many gynecological procedures, including fertility and cancer surgery.  With the laparoscopic procedure, the surgeon makes a few small incisions under the belly button for the insertion of long, thin surgical instruments as well as a fiber-optic camera which he can use to view the procedure on a nearby monitor screen. This type of surgery results in a shorter hospital stay, less pain, faster healing and less scarring for our patients.

The most common gynecologic complaints include abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, tissue extending outside the vagina, and breast pain or lumps.  These may be a sign of any number of the conditions we treat.
